Department: Research

Location: Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom

About the role:

This exciting role will be based in Abcam’s Cambridge R&D group. As a Principal Scientist, you will be expected to suggest, and champion, R&D projects that align with current business objectives. You will provide a wider resource to the company for technical assessment of new business opportunities, interacting with teams across Abcam, locally and globally. In addition, you may be called upon to act as a point of contact for external collaborations, ensuring Abcam meets its commitments.

This position will, by necessity, operate at the interface between several fields of biology (e.g. molecular biology, immunology) and chemistry; a broad skill set would be desirable. Experience in a supervisory role would also be an advantage.

About R&D at Abcam

The R&D team within Innovation and Manufacturing department (I&M) is based at Abcam HQ in Cambridge Science Park, Cambridge, UK. The team is responsible for product development, establishing new assays and evaluating novel technologies. In addition, the team provides general troubleshooting and optimization support to the wider company.

The team offers a dynamic work environment in which priorities and projects can change frequently at short notice. Thus, the candidate must be flexible and able to quickly adapt to changing demands both within their own projects or, if necessary, to support the team’s wider objectives.

The team fosters an open discussion format, which allows the easy flow of ideas and knowledge. It is therefore important that the applicant is technically competent and confident discussing scientific detail in an open forum.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Take a lead role in delivering projects within R&D locally and globally.
  • Manage, track and report on projects for which you are accountable.
  • Provide technical support/advice/input for other projects within Abcam.
  • Provide support and fulfil technical evaluation requests from the wider company.
  • Populate the R&D ideas pool with new technologies/assays/processes that can be evaluated for internal deployment.
  • Regularly report back to the R&D group regarding current projects status and plans.
  • Develop effective relationships across Abcam, working with all departments.

About you

You will hold a PhD in biological sciences (or equivalent) with post-doctoral or industrial experience. You will have broad scientific knowledge gained from experience of working within Life Sciences Industry or academic setting. Additionally, you will have managed R&D projects and/or process development projects. Synthetic biology, Chemistry, Microscopy, or Immunology experience would be advantageous.

You will have excellent organizational capabilities, with the ability to plan, prioritise, multitask and work to deadlines. In addition, you will be a team player, comfortable building relationships across the business. You will have excellent communication and presentation skills with the ability to influence. Proficiency with MS Office is essential, and an advanced knowledge of Excel (including VBA & Macros) would be advantageous.
