Global Head, Emerging Business Lines

About the role

 

The Global Head, Emerging Business Lines reports to the SVP Product, Portfolio and Innovation (PPI). Working closely with colleagues in Customer Excellence, Manufacturing, Corporate Development and Portfolio and Innovation (Category Management, BD&L, Technical Development), she/he will drive Abcam’s long term growth and shareholder return by launching new product ranges and technologies. They will be a driven self-starter with strong leadership skills, and possess the necessary experience and know-how to deliver success in a range of RUO, Dx and Tx domains.

 

Primary responsibilities

Lead the Emerging Business Lines (EBL) organisation and team

  • Clearly define and communicate rationale, scope, accountabilities and operating model across Abcam
  • Develop and deliver the New Technology Strategy and receive approval from the Executive Leadership Team
  • In partnership with PPI Programme Management Office (PMO), design, implement and continuously review the governance process for EBLs
Launch three to four EBLs per year
  • Proactively identify and prioritise opportunities for new business lines / categories that drive growth, differentiation and long-term shareholder value
  • Make GO/NO-GO recommendations to ELT / Board based on robust analysis and insights
  • Act as the PPI lead for Corporate Development, supporting the SVP of Corporate Development and SVP PPI to identify and assess opportunities to accelerate organic growth via M&A, financing, inbound licencing, Technology Transfer (outside the core antibody portfolio)
  • Interface externally to successfully source, negotiate, close and integrate transactions (alliance, partnership, supply agreements, financing, joint venture, licencing, technology transfer, M&A)
Drive success within each Emerging Business Line
  • Develop and deliver an ambitious global strategy for positioning and growth drawing on proprietary insights (customer, competitor, technology etc.)
  • Drive the development of a unique customer proposition to deliver rapid market penetration and achieve ambitious growth targets
  • Work with Technology Development to define and implement an effective scientific and operational platform
  • Recommend a global external pricing framework
  • Develop an effective launch strategy and plan. Oversee the launch process led by Category Management and Customer Excellence
  • Manage and deliver commercial targets against defined objectives, milestones and key performance indicators
  • In partnership with Finance and PPI Programme Management Office (PMO), ensure that new business lines are supported by robust business cases and financial forecasts financials
  • Ensure smooth transition from Emerging Business Lines to Business as usual

Enabling responsibilities

  • Offer effective and timely interaction with Abcam’s senior leadership team and Board on progress, seeking approvals as necessary
  • Leadership of cross functional team(s) encompassing sales, marketing PR, manufacturing, supply chain, operations, technical development, NPD, category management, RA strategy, Business Development
  • Direct line management of a team of Strategy Managers and Analysts
  • Active member of the PPI leadership team, contributing to the long-term success of the function

  • Ability to evaluate and solve complex problems and the strategic implications of different business approaches
  • Capable of quickly developing a high-level understanding of complex technical and scientific issues and communicating this understanding in a clear manner
  • Strong team player able to build credibility at the senior level, and lead and motivate international cross function teams of senior employees
  • Proven ability to direct high level negotiations, draft and review complex agreements
  • Strategic thinker with a demonstrated ability to translate strategies in actionable plans
  • Execution mindset with a track record of moving rapidly from planning to successful execution
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills
  • Strong organisational abilities with keen attention to detail
 
Experience
  • Significant international experience in strategy and commercial business development within a life sciences context;
  • Broad-based experience across life sciences industry segments (pharma, biotech, academia, diagnostics and across the value chain) - strategic consulting experience preferred
  • Using advanced analytics techniques to contribute to company growth efforts, increasing revenue and other key business outcomes
  • MBA or PhD qualification in a life science discipline (or equivalent experience)
