We are looking for a technically skilled team player who is committed to the mission of serving life scientists to achieve their mission faster. The Senior Scientist on the chemistry technology development team investigates complex product syntheses, zeroing in on the actions needed to develop and improve new products and kits. They are hands-on in the lab running experiments and reviewing the work of research associates to foster their growth as scientists on the team. Additionally, we are looking for someone who can contribute their deep understanding of state-of-the-art organic synthesis techniques and modern analytical methods to the development of new products. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, the ability to work efficiently and independently to accomplish project objectives, excellent organizational skills with ability to prioritize and work effectively on multiple tasks is required. Excellent communication and writing skills and the ability to work well as a member of a team of interdisciplinary scientists and professionals is also required. The Technology Development (TD) team at Abcam-Eugene is seeking a PhD candidate for this position with specific experience in Chemistry, Biochemistry or a related discipline for work in our expanding detection and conjugation programs. Projects will focus on the manufacturing and development of new fluorescent and chemiluminescent dyes and labels as well as new conjugation methods that provide industry-leading performance for Abcam’s antibody-based product lines. The successful candidate will apply subject matter knowledge to solve complex chemistry, biology, immunology and related business issues and recommend appropriate options; and will work on problems of diverse complexity and scope. The candidate will have ownership of discrete projects and is expected to develop cutting-edge and unique solutions to new situations. The successful candidate will have an assigned mentor in whom to seek guidance and advice in order to be successful.
Roles & Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will drive the design and production of new dyes and labels as well as components and systems for improved conjugation methods affecting the quality, availability and cost of these products and those that contain these new components that will be manufactured internally by Abcam or by external suppliers at their facilities. They will coordinate and conduct candidate testing, lead product and system qualification tests and work with affected business units to design new and improved products. They will collaborate and communicate with management regarding the design status, project progress, and issue resolution. Infrequent travel may be required to other Abcam research or manufacturing locations, to partner companies, to external suppliers or to scientific or business conferences. In addition the successful candidate will ensure new products meet set standards of quality, reliability, and performance, collect, compile, and analyze relevant experimental data to obtain information regarding purity, structure, quality and performance, develop, track, and report on their results, provide backup support to Customer Experience for product related inquiries, initiate updates and creation of new, functional SOPs as required, identify ways to reduce waste and maximize resources, ensure synthetic manufacturing processes comply with documented standards, supervise a subset of junior associates within the Chemistry team to ensure they perform their duties in line with established company procedures, communicate with New Product Development (NPD), In-House Manufacturing (IHM) and other senior scientists onsite and at other company locations regarding ongoing synthetic work that may impact TD processes, develop new synthetic experiments for final and intermediate products that minimize finished product failures when transfer to IHM occurs, be knowledgeable of and be able to enforce standards for health and safety during work operations, identify areas of risk for synthetic or analytical error, develop mentoring relationships with associates to proactively check their understanding of methods, providing constructive feedback where appropriate and finds answers to detailed technical questions that are from associates in other departments.
You will be a graduate of a PhD program in Chemistry, Biochemistry or Chemical Engineering with a strong technical background in organic synthesis, preferentially related to organic dye or conjugation chemistry. Your experience in a manufacturing or other interdisciplinary work will be a plus. Your education, thesis work and job experience in the following areas are of particular interest: the application of synthetic organic chemistry to the preparation of innovative compounds for use as biological tools, including dyes and fluorogenic molecules, labeling technologies for detection of antibodies, proteins or enzymes, organic optoelectronic polymer synthesis or applications, live-cell antibody staining techniques.
You will have excellent oral and written communication, demonstrated teamwork and collaboration skills. Your ability to work effectively with internal and external partners world-wide, a track record of innovation and independent development, a publication record that indicates an ability to develop solutions to complex problems related to cellular assays and immunochemistry techniques will make you a perfect candidate.
