Head of Cell Sciences – New Product Development
Abcam are a leading supplier of protein research tools to life scientists, with a global reputation for high performance products with detailed technical specifications. As we continue our rapid growth and success, we now have a need for a new permanent role within our New Product Development (NPD) function, leading a cross-site Cell Science team.
Working closely with stakeholders from across our sites in NPD and interacting closely with NPD Team Leaders, you will be responsible for the efficient function and rapid, on-time delivery of cells, cell lysates, and hybridoma-derived and recombinant-derived antibodies to NPD colleagues for their validation of those antibodies and antibody-conjugates. Additionally, your team will deliver a pipeline of CRISPR/CAS9 KO-validated cell lines for use within the business.
The ideal candidate will have significant experience running groups/laboratories as well as experience building and leading highly engaged, high performing teams. You’ll have a sound knowledge of cellular biology, recombinant antibody technologies with experience in automation being an advantage.
This is an exciting opportunity for someone to lead the further development of a Cell Science group, supporting the supply of high quality cell lines, primary cells and cell line products to support the development of antibodies to aid researchers and scientists across the world to achieve their research missions, faster!
Roles and responsibilities:
• To manage a cell science in Cambridge and matrix-manage to a cell science team in Hangzhou, China.
• Prepare forecasts, budgets and investment cases for the team and facility, communicate these to senior management and monitor delivery against them.
• Coordinate with Project Managers and NPD colleagues to produce capacity plans for the facility, anticipating increases in demand and resourcing the labs to accommodate.
• Ensure team compliance with H&S, Quality, COSHH and GMO policies at all times
• Continuously improve experimental methodologies, cell types and cell treatments aimed at producing better quality products and increasing capacity.
• Gather best practice from around the organisation and the external environment, taking this and implementing improvements in our new custom-built Tissue Culture laboratories.
You will have solid and proven experience of mammalian cell culture and recombinant technologies within industry or a large academic group and experience of managing teams in a dynamic environment. Your technical skill set will include generating CRISPR/CAS9 cell lines as well as hybridoma cell culture. During your career you will have demonstrated the ability to meet challenging objectives and be constantly striving for optimal results. Experience of automation or leading teams across countries would be an advantage.
